At first glance, Garfield seems like any other yellow tabby. He arrived at West Suburban Humane Society dirty, matted and sick – all pretty common for a homeless cat. But Garfield is no ordinary cat. His story takes him from Downers Grove Illinois, all the way to Lafayette Indiana, to the Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine. Staff and volunteers at the shelter noticed that Garfield was drinking and urinating excessively, worrisome symptoms of something potentially serious. Local vets had little luck diagnosing or treating him, so through a contact at Purdue, Garfield traveled south for treatment. Vet Scott Owens, of the Small Animal Hospital at Purdue, tells the rest of Garfield’s extraordinary story, and the mystery surrounding him. Garfield’s life has been tough – unwanted by his owner and plagued by a mysterious illness, he was fortunate to find his way to WSHS. Through the efforts of the staff, volunteers, his local vets, and the vets at Purdue, he finally got the treatment he needed – not to mention a new home!
